Charles Lotton Blue / Green / Gold Large Iridescent Peacock Vase (1995)
This is it, the quintessential Charles Lotton Blue Iridescent Peacock Vase.
Our hope is that someday it may appear in documents and be exhibited in places that will honor the late Master of 20th Century American glassmaking.
While under the advisement of Tiffany Studio's Lilian Nassau in the early 1970's, Charles experimented with many Tiffany themes from an earlier time. Nassau, the doyenne of New York City decorative arts, was smitten by Charles' talent and put him under contract to produce miniatures and to experiment with different pigments, chemical elements, and color combination. She urged him to experiment, and that he did.
When he struck out on his own in the mid-1970's, he began creating larger creations, including lamps, large vases, and commissioned pieces for clients. His peacock creations are found in certain vases and lamps, but nowhere is it better exemplified in this blue / green / golden iridescent masterpiece. Our preference for the blue / green / cream iridized striping and the "peacock's eye" feather technique reminds us of the actual plumage of that amazing bird, the peacock.
We have on occasion used peacock feathers in the vase, to accentuate its zany creativity and draw attention to its beauty.
This magnificent vase has a radiance and beauty that photos cannot quite capture. The sheer craftsmanship in creating such an object is impressive. Sure, there are videos of Charles doing his work effortlessly, but how could he know the result of the clumps of molten glass he worked with such patience and exactitude? Was he inspired by some glass muse amidst the heat of the kilns and molten glass that surrounded him? How could he artifice such beautiful lines and never err in his precise placement of different pigments and lines?
The vase is about 10 inches tall and about 7 inches across. It weighs about 10 lbs, and is signed "Charles Lotton 1995."
