Murano Mandruzzato Sommerso Cobalt Blue, Yellow, & Cased Glass Vase(1960s-1970s)
Murano Mandruzzato Modern Madness!
This mid-Century gem has just the right punch of cobalt and subtle yellow for a mid-century palette.
It was made in Murano by the Mandruzzato Company between 1960 and 1964 using the Sommerso (i.e. "submerged") glass technique. "Sommerso" is a very ancient working technique discovered by the Venetian glass masters. Sommerso glass begins with a blown or solid glass core, and then, through immersion in other crucibles of different colors of molten glass, allows several superimposed layers to develop with a suggestive chromatic effect. This process is very difficult to complete successfully.
It is performed only by very experienced glass masters.
Our Blue / Yellow Sommerso vase is geometric and linear. It has the modernist vibe — so appealing to today's design influencers. With strong lines, clean cuts, decisive and very sharp edges, the overall effect is one of harmony and precision.
Some background on Mandruzzato Glass: The Mandruzzato company was founded in 1934. For generations it has carried on a family project with passion, creating furnishing objects and unique design pieces found it the finest design galleries in Milan, Paris and New York.
All of Mandruzzato's craftsmen were true Masters of the glassmaking arts and the company soon became one of the best in Murano. In 2000 Alessandro Mandruzzato, a Master glassmaker born in 1970, became the owner of the company.
Our vase belongs to the traditional period of the Mandruzzato Company, during the early 1960's. The vase is in excellent condition. It begs for proper placement in a Modernist environment, but is suitable for any discriminating Murano collector.
It is about 8 inches tall, 3.5 inches wide, and weighs about 2 lbs.
