John Lotton Pink & Silver Iridized Threaded Leaf & Vine Vase (1992)
John Lotton's "Floral Fantasy" is a transitional piece in his artistic development. The vase's threaded silvery vines morph into leaves and then floral petals. Are these leaves or flowers? The leaves remind us of the Multiflora colors invented by his father Charles Lotton. The inner casing of the piece is a pearl white, and this affects the lighting effects depending upon light exposure (see example in photo).
As well, John Lotton's use of iridized silver pigments creates a sense of motion. What is on surface a restful piece with calming colors, becomes suddenly a gathering storm of nearly reddish color. The pink pigments shift and darken and awaken the observer to an unseen energy.
John stopped producing larger pieces like this following an accident and his career path evolved into other areas. Many Lotton collectors believe his earlier works are greatly under-appreciated. They are gaining value and importance as collectors and institutions awaken to this early talent.
The piece measures about 9 inches tall and is about 5 1/2 inches across at its widest. It weighs about 3 lbs.
