Richard R. Clive "Trout Fishing in a Mountain Stream" Oil Painting (1940's)
This beautiful oil on canvas landscape of a fisherman landing a catch (trout?) was created by celebrated New York artist Richard R. Clive. It is considered one of his finer works due to its detail and playful use of color. The setting of the work may well be one of the wild trout streams in Upstate New York, but the title of the work has become separated from the piece itself.
Clive was well known in the New York area throughout his life, as well as within the military establishment in Washington, DC and elsewhere. His works are found in the collections of the US Navy Combat Art Collection, Washington, DC; the Munic Collection, Ossining, NY; and The Arts & Science Center of Nashua, NH. He received commissions from WAVES at the US Naval Training Center in Bainbridge, Md; and from the Marines and Civilians Division, S Vietnam, Dept of Navy, Washington, DC.
Clive was born in New York City in 1912 and died in 1992. He studied at the National Academy of Design in 1930 and received his Bachelor in Fine Arts from New York University in 1935. He also studied with noted artists Dan Greene & Harold Wolcott.
Clive was known for his Exhibitions at such events as the Westchester Year of History Celebration, 1959; the Salmagundi Club Annual Exhibitions from 1961- 1972, The American Friends of the Hebrew University Art Festivals from 1963 - 1965; four presentations at the Naval Art Co-op & Liaison Committee from 1963 - 1972; and the Stevens Center Invitational Art Exhibition at the Stevens Institute of Technology, 1968.
He received various awards, including from the Women's Clubs of Westchester, 1960-1967; the prize for portrait, New Rochelle Art Association, 1967 & first for graphic, 1968; and the Lt. Harry E. Breng Award, American Legion, 1968.
He was a Member: Salmagundi Club (member NACAL Committee); American Artists Professional League; Academy Artists Association; Artists Fellowship; and the Rockport Art Association, where he served as its Vice President in 1970.
His work is receiving increasing attention among collectors, and this particular work has surprising color variations under the correct lighting, particularly the sky interpretation. The work is in a beautiful Gold painted classical embellished frame measuring about 30 inches x 36 inches. The painting itself measures about 20 inches by 24 inches and is Belgian canvas on stretchers.
This would be a perfect collectors piece for those interested in New York regional art, landscape and / or wildlife themes.
