Sitzendorf Reticulated Porcelain Cherub Tazza (19th Century)

SKU: RSB-000147

A beautiful antique Sitzendorf reticulated Tazza (fruit bowl or centerpiece) with merry cherubs inviting guests to partake in hospitality... How can one resist the temptation of enjoying the elegance and beauty of finely crafted Sitzendorf porcelain in this age of vulgarity? The cherubs harken back to a time of fine dining and the highest craftsmanship of the German porcelain masters. The Sitzendorfer Porzellanmanufaktur was established in 1760 by Johann Georg Maltzahn and Carl Martin Wezel in Sitzendorf, Germany. Throughout its history, Sitzendorfer Porzellanmanufaktur experienced various changes in ownership and mergers.

Around 1760, Georg Heinrich Macheleid, a theology student, received permission from Prince Johann Friedrich of Schwarzenberg-Rudolstadt to establish a porcelain manufactory in Sitzerode (Sitzendorf) located in Germany’s Thuringia region. Under orders from the Prince, the factory moved to Volkstedt in 1762. Macheleid left in 1767. Christian Nonne succeeded him. After numerous name changes, the factory continues in operation as Aelteste Vokstedter Porzellanfabrik.

Wilhelm Liebmann reestablished the porcelain manufactory in Sitzendorf in 1850. A fire gutted the factory. Only the kilns remained. With the financial backing of Wilhelm Örtel, Lieberman rebuilt the factory. When Örtel and Lieberman decided to retire, they sold the factory to the brothers Alfred and Carl Voigt in 1884.

This piece was from the Spurrier Estate in Iowa and was never used as a Tazza or fruit bowl but rested on a high shelf for many years.

This beautiful piece is about 12 inches high and 7 inches wide across the bowl atop the column. The encrusted cherubs and flowers are in mint shape.
