Helen Spurrier Watercolor "Nostalgia" Near Buffalo, IA (1956)
Helen Hunn Spurrier, noted award-winning Iowa and Regional artist, created this watercolor after sketching her family's home place, a farm located near Buffalo, a hamlet in Muscatine County, Iowa. Helen's childhood memories of her parents' homestead sparked a series of watercolors and oil paintings related to her childhood events. These events included birthday parties, circuses, school yard playtime, and flowers that grew wild on the farm.
In this watercolor, Helen has playfully placed doves (pigeons) atop the Dovecote. And a white rooster rooting about in the foreground. An abandoned water pump reminds us of the farm's past usefulness...
This particular painting, "Nostalgia" won several juried awards in the Quad Cities area of Iowa and Illinois in the mid-1950's.
The painting is about 20 inches wide and 18 inches high and is tastefully mounted in a rustic frame.
