Antique Lithograph "View of Harper's Ferry, Virginia" (1855)
Consider purchasing this historic engraving of Harper's Ferry, Virginia from 1855. This view of the water gap in the Blue Ridge Mountains was described by Thomas Jefferson as being "one of the most stupendous scenes in nature." It survives today as a well-visited National Park, now part of the State of West Virginia and about 85 miles from the Nation's Capital in Washington, D.C.
There are many spectacular vistas for visitors to enjoy at Harper's Ferry, including overlooks from each of the three states in which the park is located. In West Virginia, one can hike a portion of the Appalachian Trail on Loudoun Heights to overlook the historic town. From Jefferson Rock, visitors can observe the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers.
Within the lower town of Harper's Ferry, visitors can cross the Potomac River footbridge into Maryland, follow the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park towpath for a short distance, and then take a trail up to the Maryland Heights overlook. At this popular spot, yet another amazing view of Harper's Ferry, the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers, and the Blue Ridge Mountains is available for visitors to enjoy.
This print dates from about 1855. It is tastefully matted in the French style, and has a nice golden frame. It weighs about 3 lbs and measures about 14 inches by 16 inches.
