Red Amberina Rearing Horse L.E. Smith Bookends (1940's)
These L. E. Smith Red Amberina Rearing Horse Bookends are beautifully crafted from the mid-Century era, probably the mid- to late 1940's. And, they are RED RED RED! The Amberina tones are seen in the mane and legs and when viewed in full sunshine.
The Deep Ruby Color is made possible by the gold content of the glass in its creation. They weigh about 3 lbs. each and are designed to be just what they are: Bookends. There is no mark on them. We surmise that the stickers on them were long ago washed off by meticulous housekeepers.
The Ruby Amberina Color is unusual — lots of clear glass versions are on the market, but not these, which fetch a premium from collectors and decorators. And these are real stunners. They catch the light, seem to move a bit during the day, and under ultraviolet light become outright "psychedelic."
These would make a special gift for young ones... who knows? Perhaps these horses might inspire the kids to crack a book just to satisfy the horses that protect their favorite stories and subjects.
