Alaskan Inuit Soapstone Sculpture of Seal on Pedestal (1985)
Please care for this beautiful Inuit Soapstone sculpture of an Alaskan Seal on a pedestal. It is signed by the artist, whose name appears to be "Ypyook" or something to that effect which is carved on the bottom of the piece and shown in the photo.
The simplicity of the lines and beauty of the stone evoke the spirit of these amazing creatures — which abound in the vastness of Alaska's maritime areas and are essential for sustaining human life in the Wilderness. We purchased this from an Inuit artisan in 1985 while on business in Alaska. It has graced our library for many decades and would be a perfect remembrance for those of you who have visited this magical corner of the round world ...
It weighs about 2 lbs and is about 6 inches high and 4 inches across.
