J. & J. Parkin Pair of Antique Hand Painted Botanical Prints (1835)
This pair of rare J. & J. Parkin Hand-painted Pansy Prints have amazingly brilliant pigmentation in spite of their nearly 200 years of existence. They are exquisitely detailed renderings of 5 different species of Pansy in each of the two plates. There are deep purples, indigoes, blues, yellows, golden orange, violets and green leaves that have withstood the ravages of time and a trip across the Pond.
The pair have beautiful French matting and marbled taping, an art in and of itself. We acquired these in London in 1997 at an Antiquarian bookshop. The J. & J. Parkin company is apparently no longer in existence. We have found no direct record yet of this firm, but several of their botanical prints, of lesser quality, were auctioned off by Christie's in 2005.
The pair of engravings measure about 4.5 inches wide and 7.5 inches high and are mounted in traditionally-styled Museum Quality glass frames w. UV protection and protective dust backing. They will be sold as a pair only, after nearly 200 years of "being together."
