Vandermark Hearts on Vine Signed Art Nouveau Bronze Egret Lamp (1970's)
Unique and rarely on the market: This Jerry Vandermark Art Nouveau Table Lamp is gracefully manufactured in Bronze with an amazing Heart & Vine shade. It features a long-legged Egret foraging around a wildly stylized Art Nouveau Lilly Pad. A long tendril or stalk supports a trumpet-like floral shade, a psychedelic flower from the 1970's perhaps.
The shade was blown and then iridized in a variety of blues, greens, lavenders and light blue. It is further adorned with the "Hearts & Vine" Vandermark motif, found on many of his perfume bottles and vases made in the 1970's and 1980's. On the inside of the shade is a very faintly etched Vandermark signature. It's hard to see in the photographs...
The shade changes color as daylight moves around the room. Evenings, it is more subdued. As the sun goes down, it is more of an accent light or reading lamp with a very focused light beam. So, it is only a faintly glowing lamp, as well as an impressive kinetic work of art.
We have never seen an equivalent example of a Vandermark lamp with "Heart & Vine" motif combined with a beautiful bronze Egret. Perhaps others exist. Apparently, Mr. Vandermark is no longer producing glass art, so the availability of such pieces is very limited. According to the Vandermark Merrit Company's Web Site:
"... Vandermark Merritt Glass Studios was founded in 1972 by Jerry Vandermark and Doug Merritt. Today, Doug Merritt is the primary glass blower following a tradition of the highest quality glass blowing. The studio built its reputation with museum quality colonial-style creations, original Art Glass in the Nouveau and Deco traditions, crystal sculpture, contemporary designs and exquisite cameo creations.
Vandermark glass creations are found in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Smithsonian Institution, Toledo Museum, Corning Museum, Wheaton Museum of American Glass and many other major museums, as well as in prestigious private collections."
RSB believes that this is a museum-quality piece, much like many of our Lotton Glass pieces.
It measures 20 inches high with a 9 inch circular base upon which the Egret stands. It's quite heavy, being bronze. and weighs about 30 lbs.
