Joel Owen (1892 - 1931) Oil Painting: Gleaners at Twilight on the Scottish Coast
Joel Owen (1892 - 1931) was a British landscape painter who painted highland landscapes and other rural scenes, many of which were painted during his Scottish travels. This enigmatic view of gleaners on the Scottish coast evoke a sense of melancholy and completion of things. Ironically, it was created toward the end of Owen's life. This beautiful crepuscular view of gleaners has deep, rich, sunset ambiance. As one of Owen's works from his own twilight years, it shows a grace and sentiment unlike earlier "full sunlight" landscapes and impressions of the countryside .
Owen's landscapes are characteristically atmospheric, painted in a traditional style with Victorian discipline yet with an impressionist color sense. Work by Owen has been auctioned by Christies, the London auction house and is found in fine galleries.
This unusual painting was purchased in Alexandria, Virginia from an estate in the 1980's. It has a beautiful golden frame and measures about 22 inches wide and 16 inches tall, not counting the thick framing.
It would be an ideal addition for a collector or a museum.
