LS&S Limoges Gold Art Nouveau Wisteria Scalloped Dresser Tray (1890-1910)
Today, Limoges Porcelain marks carry a designation by the French government. So, when you see a piece of Limoges porcelain, the mark you see is not from a particular studio. It may come from one of many studios in the region that choose to use the standardized Limoges porcelain marks.
And that’s natural given that the elements (including the traces of soil) needed to produce these delicate creations can be found only in Limoges, France.
This exceptional porcelain dresser tray was made by Coiffe Limoges of Limoges, France between 1891 and 1914 when they used this green star mark with FRANCE underneath. The LS & S mark is the name of the decorator and importer Lazarus Straus and Sons of New York (1895-1927). The gold finishing alone is worth the price of this museum-quality piece. The china was made as white ware blanks in France then sent to New York for decoration and distribution to department stores. This pattern has no name or pattern number, but similar china can be found by Coiffe in this same shape.
The piece is about 9.5 inches long and 3.5 inches wide. It weighs about 3/4 of a lb.
